Here we continue to tell readers of our blog about what important and necessary research is being done in the world by various organizations and foundations in order to preserve the product that we all love — coffee. Including, of course, specialty coffee and organic coffee. Research is also being conducted to improve its quality, resistance to pests and diseases, to develop new botanical varieties, and more, in order to ultimately support the global farming community.
1. Coffee Research Foundation, Kenya. It was founded in 1964. Promotes research on coffee cultivation: plant genetics, disease resistance, pest control, development of new coffee varieties for different climatic zones, and more. Funded by the Government of Kenya and other stakeholders, such as international research organizations.
3. International Women's coffee Union (IWCA). Designed to empower women in the international coffee community, promote gender equality, and provide access to financial and information resources and training. Funding is provided from donations, grants, and contributions from partners.
4. Coffee for Peace. An initiative that promotes peace and economic development in areas of various conflicts (economic, political, social, etc.) through the cultivation and trade of coffee. Focus on building peace, developing entrepreneurship, and promoting social cohesion. Funding is provided through product sales, donations, and partner contributions.
5. Coffee rust Research Initiative. Coffee rust is a serious disease that has spread around the globe, which affects coffee crops, unfortunately, more Arabica than Robusta. The initiative focuses on developing sustainable coffee varieties by breeding new hybrids, building cultivation management strategies, and developing new herbicides and fungicides that do not harm consumer health. The initiative has made progress in finding and breeding rust-resistant coffee varieties and contributes to a global understanding of how to deal with the disease. Funding is provided by research grants, government support, and contributions from coffee industry participants.
6. Coffee Quality Institute (CQI). The work aims to improve the quality of coffee and the lives of the people who produce it through training and research. The organization also connects producers with markets that value quality specialty coffee. The CQI Institute is best known for its Q Grader program, which has trained tens of thousands of professionals around the world to systematically assess coffee quality. The Institute has also initiated projects to help farmers who grow high-quality coffee and those who want to enter the specialty coffee growing market.
7. Coffee and Climate Initiative. It provides farmers with tools and strategies to adapt to global climate change. It provides training on climate-optimized agricultural methods and develops solutions to mitigate the effects of changing environmental conditions for coffee production. The initiative has trained thousands of farmers around the world and introduced climate change-resistant farming techniques, helping to stabilize yields and improve the quality of coffee products. Funding is provided by coffee companies, international development organizations, and individual donors, including individual ones.
